It can be tempting, especially after the season of overindulgence, to want a quick-fix for shedding the sluggishness and being able to button your jeans again. But before you start counting calories and skipping meals, hear us out – we have some top tips for staying healthy, without the bit about feeling hungry and sad.
1. Eat whole foods
Empty calories are the trap here – instead of filling up on snacks that give your body very little to work with, try sticking to nutrient-dense foods that will fill you up faster, and keep you going for longer. Been feeling low energy lately? You might not be getting enough slow-release energy from your food. Veggies, legumes and pulses and high-protein meats like salmon or tuna are perfect options to keep you bouncing like the Energizer Bunny.
2. Don’t skip breakfast
We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and there’s a good reason why: energising yourself first thing in the morning is a sure-fire way to keep you performing at tip-top, plus you’ll probably snack less because you’re not starting the day hungry. Win!
3. Stay balanced
Eating healthy isn’t about deprivation – nobody wants to gaze longingly at an offered plate of cookies while saying mournfully, “no, not for me, thanks”. It’s maintaining a healthy balance in your diet that’s important – balance treats with plenty of fresh produce, whole grains, and plenty of protein. Everything in moderation!
4. Plan meals in advance
Part of making the shift from unhealthy to healthy eating is taking some of the unhealthier options out of your hands. When you plan your meals in advance, you avoid reaching for the nearest snack food out of convenience, and keep your portions relative to what you’re actually eating. It also saves you money and reduces food waste, as an added bonus. Plan your week with Fitfood weekly subscription boxes.
5. Stay active
Making sure you keep your body moving. Staying active is proven to improve brain function, increase feelings of contentment and wellbeing, strengthen the heart and bones as well as releasing toxins and keeping you energised. Now that sounds healthy to us!
