Eat your greens!

Turns out, your parents were right. In addition to their physical benefits, green vegetables offer some noteworthy mental health advantages. Vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, and kale are rich in folate, a B vitamin that plays a vital role in the metabolism of serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline, essential brain chemicals that regulate mood. Beans and lentils are also excellent sources of folate, with just a cup of cooked lentils fulfilling 90% of the recommended daily allowance.

Nuts!

Nuts and seeds are a great source of plant-based proteins, healthy fats, and fiber. These nutrient-dense foods, such as almonds, cashews, walnuts, and sunflower seeds, contain amino acids that play a crucial role in the production of mood-boosting serotonin, making them an ideal snack. Moreover, some nuts and seeds, like Brazil nuts and pine nuts, are rich in zinc and selenium. Research indicates that deficiencies in these minerals may lead to an increased risk of depression, making these foods an important addition to one's diet.

Dark Chocolate.

While chocolate is often perceived as unhealthy, dark chocolate does have some health benefits. Chocolate contains flavonoids, which can increase blood flow to the brain, reduce inflammation, and improve brain health, potentially supporting mood regulation.

Keep in mind that milk chocolate typically includes added ingredients like sugar and fat. Therefore, it's advisable to choose dark chocolate, which has higher flavonoid content and lower added sugar. If you buy quality dark chocolate with a high cocoa content, then it’s quite nutritious. It contains a decent amount of soluble fiber and is loaded with minerals. To moderate your intake, limit yourself to 1-2 small squares of chocolate with at least 70% cocoa.
